What is a VPN?
A VPN or virtual private network, gives you privacy and anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection. VPNs mask your internet protocol (IP) address to your online actions are untraceable. VPNs are a safe way to encrypt data you are accessing to prevent any malicious activity from occurring.
Why should you use a VPN?
When connected to an unsecure Wi-Fi you are putting your private information and device at risk because public Wi-Fi can be the perfect gateway for cyber criminals to plant malicious code or access private information. If you want to learn more about public Wi-Fi read our other blog.
VPNs encrypt your IP (which can be used to find your current location) and encrypt any incoming or outgoing data allowing you to surf the web without someone having the ability to look over your shoulder at any time.
What a VPN hides:
Your browsing history – Companies every day are collecting information on you as user, a VPN prevents this data from being collected and stops companies from sending you personalized mass advertisements.
Your IP address and location – This one is a no brainer, your outgoing and incoming data can be used to find your exact location in real time, using a VPN prevents anyone from accessing this information.
Your location for streaming – Many streaming services are only available in specific countries; you can use a VPN to specify your location to access streaming services or any other websites as if you were in another country.
Your devices – A VPN can help protect any of your devices including desktop computer, laptop, tablet, and smart phone from prying eyes. A VPN encrypt the data that you send and receive so hackers can not watch your every move.
Is it safe to use any VPN?
There are some inherit risks to using a VPN, while you are protecting your data from any outside sources, the VPN you are using can have full access to all that information. It is important to find a VPN that is trusted and has been researched and found safe to use. Before using a VPN do research, it is safe to assume that the more you pay the better it is.
